A Beginner's Guide to Reformer Pilates (What to Expect, What to Wear)

Reformer Pilates looks a bit intimidating from the outside — sliding platforms, springs, straps, pulleys. Once you've done one class you'll wonder what you were nervous about. Here's the full picture.

What is a reformer?

The reformer is a sliding-carriage bed with adjustable springs for resistance and straps for arms and legs. Because the resistance is variable, it lets beginners work at the right level from day one — you're not fighting a heavy weight, you're controlling a spring.

What to wear

  • ·Grip socks are recommended (we sell them in-studio if you don't have any)
  • ·Fitted activewear — leggings and a supportive top work best
  • ·Avoid loose t-shirts that flip up during inversions
  • ·No shoes on the reformer
  • ·Bring water — that's it, we provide everything else

What happens in a class

Every Passion Pilates class is 45 minutes and follows the same rhythm:

1. Warm-up on the reformer — feet in straps, easy leg circles 2. Standing/plank series — footwork and full-body integration 3. The main sequence — depending on the class style (Foundation, Strength, Power, Flow & Stretch) 4. Cool-down & stretch — always on the reformer, always feels amazing

How to pick your first class

If you're brand new, Foundation Reformer is the class to start with — the instructor slows the tempo and explains the setup for every exercise. Once you feel confident, most people rotate through Active, Strength and Power to hit different systems.

How to book your first class

The easiest first step is our 2-week trial for $55 (6 reformer classes). It gives you enough time to try 3–4 different class styles and see which you love. You can book online in about 90 seconds.

Common beginner questions

"Do I need to be flexible?" No. Pilates *builds* flexibility — you don't need it to start.

"Will I be sore?" Probably a little the next day, especially your deep core. That's normal and fades within 2–3 classes.

"How often should I go?" Twice a week is the sweet spot for beginners. Three times a week is where you'll see real body changes.

See you on the reformer.
